It's amazing to look back on the career that the now 45-year-old has had and all the celebrities she has met, from starring in a Sabrina movie with Ryan Reynolds to becoming friends with Joey Lawrence. After not starring on a TV show for several years, Melissa took on the light-hearted show Melissa and Joey, and fans were happy to see the star on their TV screens again.
But even though Melissa Joan Hart has played several popular TV characters and has been working for decades, are there some decisions that she could have made differently? While everyone remembers Sabrina The Teenage Witch fondly, Melissa has taken on some lesser-known roles. Keep reading to find out if Melissa Joan Hart's career choices negatively impacted her net worth.
Melissa Joan Hart's Career After 'Sabrina The Teenage Witch'
Since the '90s sitcom was so popular, fans wonder about Melissa Joan Hart's opinion of the Sabrina reboot on Netflix, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. The original show was a huge success and Melissa had steady work for a long time, as she starred on the show as the main character from 1996 until 2003.
While Melissa Joan Hart has a $13 million net worth, according to Celebrity Net Worth, her career seemed to stall a bit after Sabrina The Teenage Witch went off the air.
In 2003, Melissa starred in the TV movie Rent Control as Holly, a woman who lived in a rent-controlled apartment with her boyfriend Calvin. They were able to live there because her aunt owned it, and they chose to keep living there when her aunt passed away.
Melissa doesn't have many stand-out roles in the years between Sabrina and her TV sitcom Melissa and Joey which aired from 2010 to 2015. She appeared in several more TV movies, including 2006's Dirtbags and 2009's My Fake Fiance. She also appeared in many Christmas movies and starred in the 2021 movie Mistletoe in Montana.
When Melissa Joan Hart looks back on her career, it seems that she thinks that she could have starred in more movies if she had made different decisions.
In an interview with Vice, Melissa Joan Hart explained "When I was doing Sabrina, on my summers off, I'd do Sabrina movies. They always coerced me into doing them by doing storylines that I might want to do. They knew that Roman Holiday with Audrey Hepburn was my favorite movie, so they wrote a script that was similar called Sabrina Goes to Rome, and they brought me to Italy."
Melissa said that she could have starred in some scary films and she said no: "I was getting offered a lot of horror movies. I didn't really like the genre or wanna be a part of it. So I think at that point, I talked my way out of a movie career. That's something I'd go back and adjust."
Melissa Joan Hart's TV Show 'No Good Nick' Got Cancelled
While Melissa Joan Hart had her successful sitcom Melissa and Joey, her Netflix shows No Good Nick got canceled.
Variety reported that the show was only given one season.
This definitely affected Melissa Joan Hart's net worth, as she missed out on a few more seasons of salary.
Sweet Harts Closed Down
Melissa Joan Hart also started her own business when she decided to open a shop that sold candy. But unfortunately, she had to shut it down. It seems like the cost of opening and closing the store might have affected her net worth.
Melissa Joan Hart opened Sweet Harts in 2009 and told People that she doesn't have a big sweet tooth herself: "Actually, I don’t like sweets unless I’m pregnant. It’s a very lucky thing! The only thing I’ll eat [at the store] is the non-fat frozen yogurt.” Melissa said that she had always wanted to open up a candy shop and she and her mom decided that it would be a good idea. The store had bubble gum and peach frozen yogurt along with classic, popular candy.
According to E! News, Shana Kharineh, who was the manager at the Sherman Oaks Store, sued Melissa Joan Hart for "wrongful termination, discrimination based on race, retaliation against employee complaining of discrimination, failure to pay wages owed, failure to pay overtime wages, failure to provide meal periods, failure to provide rest periods, failure to pay minimum wage and unlawful business practices."
Shana Kharineh said that she didn't get breaks or overtime when she had to be at the store more than 60 hours a week, and she was only paid $450 per week. Shana said that someone from the company said to hear that "'black on black' did not look appropriate" and she wasn't allowed to wear black to work.
The people who represent Melissa Joan Hart said that this wasn't true: "Melissa does not currently function in a day-to-day operational capacity, and has never met Shana Kharineh. Sweet Harts Sweets is an equal opportunity employer, as is Melissa Joan Hart."
